When Melbourne stayed up. (White Night Melbourne 2013)

 1. Smile (St Kilda Rd, 2013)

On the way to White Night - Took the bus, as most of the trams were packed like sardines. Needless to say, bus was empty and it was a cool ride to the National Gallery of Victoria (our starting point). This was taken as the bus overtook a tram. I was actually trying to photograph the hippie near the window (He looked very excited - or just really high. Lol). Found a smiling man instead. Good enough for me. Hahah

2. Please exit in an orderly manner (Arts Centre, 2013)
Before you ask - No, its not the same tram in which I took Mr Smiley's photograph. This must have been later. This was taken at the last tram stop in front of the Arts Centre, as the whole tram network in the CBD is terminated until 7am the next day. One of my favourite shots of the night - I love the mood of this picture. Everyone excited and gearing up for White Night, guy sending a text to his friend for a possible meeting place.....and a Heston Blumenthal lookalike. Yes sir, I have taken your photograph.

3. Masses of Mass. Mad. (Princes Bridge, 2013)
At this point I was thinking of turning back and going home, mainly for two reasons - It will get rowdy as the night progresses (not a fan) and it will be hard to photograph anything tonight. Everyone will be everywhere. Unfortunately, I am my father's son, so I soldiered on.

4. Oh, hello. (Flinders Street Station, 2013)
After some pushing and shoving, found this great spectacle. The Flinders Street Station's main entrance was converted into a stage where most of the acts will perform for the night. That means I have to loiter about until 3 am to watch Cat Empire perform. Sigh. Latte please. 1 sugar.

 5. Tram line's full. (Swanston Street, 2013)
Swanston Street, in my opinion, is Melbourne's busiest street, with the main tram line passing through it and where all the action is. No tram was to be seen this night, and the crowd activity was on steroids. Any individual who could busked, was busking - Adding much charm to what White Night represents. (Originally conceived in France, it is an attempt to make art and culture accessible to large audiences)

6. Balancing Act (Swanston/Little Bourke Streets, 2013)
One of the aforementioned acts of the night. Pretty good at keeping his shiny ball in the air. Most of the time.

7. Library Lights (State Library, 2013)
The State Library illuminated in beautiful colours for the night. By Projection Teknic.

8. Polka dots seem to be the rave these days. (State Library, 2013)
Interior shot of the library, where the public were treated to the music of the Exaudi Youth Choir, Dean Frenkel and Claire Patti the whole night, until the wee hours of the morning. (7pm - 6am)

 9. Splattered dome (State Library, 2013)
Beneath the iconic library dome

 10. Projected Runway (Flinders Lane, 2013)
White Night collaboration with Melbourne Fashion Festival - "Strut Your Stuff", a video presentation showcasing local fashion designs. Not many were interested when there's partying afoot.

 11. The gates of Hell. (Flinders Lane, 2013)
I have no idea. Hahaha

12. Football is a religion. #GoCarlton (Flinders Lane/Swanston Street, 2013)

Light installation behind St Paul's Cathedral. Phil Lethlean, artist.

 13. Hello Flinders (Flinders Street, 2013)
Braving my way to the main stage. Was close to 3 am at this point :)

 14. A kooky tight spot. (Flinders Street, 2013)
Pigeonhole: The Collaboragents. performance by Jodee Mundy and Dan Goronszy

 15. Wonderland/Flinders Street Station (Flinders Street, 2013)
Majestic view of the station. Light projection by Electric Canvas. I wonder if they'll do this to the Sultan Abdul Samad (Malaysia) building. Would be nice.

16. And the mice come out to play I (Flinders Street Station, 2013)
Cat Empire!

17. And the mice come out to play II (Flinders Street Station, 2013)
Cat Empire!

 18. Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.... (Flinders Street, 2013)
Man on top of a Melbourne City signboard advertising $5 helmets.

 19. Higher class mouse (Flinders/Swanston Street)
What better way to avoid the sweating crowd.

20. A true fan (Swanston Street, 2013)
Cat Empire were playing 'The Wine Song' at this time, and this guy kept the crowd going. Well done Sir.

 21. Calling it a (white) night. (Princes Bridge, 2013)
Walking to the tram stop at 4.30am. Didn't want to take anymore photographs after this shot. Still contemplating whether to do it all over again next year. Hahaha. Hope you enjoyed the photographs.

Best,

E.

When A City Stays Up All Night (White Night Melbourne 2013)

Hi there,

Quick post - Am busy editing a client's family portraits. Hopefully I have permission to post some over here. Will let you know :)

However, I did promise some White Night Melbourne pictures. I have edited most of them - Just don't seem to have the time to write my post out yet.

For the time being, here's one of them - A shot of Flinder's Street Station in all its glory. Dubbed Wonderland by the organisers, it was beautifully transformed into a stage where we were treated to performances from 7pm to 6am. Brilliant stuff. Plus Cat Empire performed, which just sweetened the deal for me.

Hats off to Electric Canvas for the beautiful light projections on all the buildings. By far the best night organised by a city that I've experienced.

Best,
E.
